High Speed Scanning

The first of these technologies is a high-speed PC-centric ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) that processes image data at speeds much greater than previous models.
Absolute scanning versatility
Absolute scanning versatility is an inherent feature of the Perfection 4490 Photo. With two film holders (one designed for two strips of 35mm film or four mounted slides, and the other for 6x12cm medium format film), advanced photo scanning and restoration capabilities, and the optional Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), the Perfection 4490 Photo delivers high levels of flexibility while meeting the key requirements of high quality and high speed.

Automatic Document Feeder
With the optional Automatic Document Feeder (ADF), the Perfection 4490 Photo is an ideal tool for high resolution document scanning and archiving. Featuring the ability to hold up to 30 sheets, which can be automatically fed, scanned at up to 3ppm and ejected, the Perfection 4490 Photo's ADF adds even more to the scanner's flexibility. In combination with enhancements to Epson Scan software, the ADF dramatically streamlines scanning and single-file storage of documents up to a maximum of 99** pages.
High resolution and optical density
Underpinning the Perfection 4490 Photo's high level of performance is its 4800dpi Matrix CCD (Charge Coupled Device) and Micro Lens technology combination. Adding even greater scanning resolution power is the scanner's ability to move the optical carriage at 9600dpi with Micro Step Drive - a feature that has consistently provided Epson Perfection scanner users with brilliantly clear images exhibiting high colour consistency.
Featuring also an optical density of 3.4 Dmax, the Perfection 4490 Photo affords significant improvements over earlier models in capturing details in both highlight and shadow. The results are highly detailed scans which, when printed on an Epson Stylus Photo printer, deliver outstanding photographic prints.
Automatic Film Scan Cleaning
Featuring DIGITAL ICE™ and DIGITAL ICE Lite™ technology, the Perfection 4490 Photo delivers incredibly powerful support for detecting and removing dust and scratch marks from colour film and slide scans.
DIGITAL ICE differentiates itself from software-only solutions because it does not soften, blur or otherwise alter any underlying details or composition of the original image. Instead, this innovative technology works from within the scanner during the scanning process to provide users with a clear, authentic base image that improves on the original image. This is accomplished by obtaining information about the nature and location of surface and near-surface defects as an image is scanned.
During the typical scanning process, red, green and blue image information is gathered from the RGB channels while DIGITAL ICE scanning uses a fourth channel, referred to as Defect channel (using an infrared LED), to collect the defect information.

Giving you everything you need to realise the full potential of the Perfection 4490 Photo is a bundled range of powerful scanning software tools.
With a new version of the highly acclaimed Epson Creativity Suite, Perfection 4490 Photo users have access to a standard interface for managing image and image input/output devices and applications. Featuring a simplified user interface, the management of image files is more straightforward and streamlined than ever before. Functioning as the Creativity Suite's main hub, Epson File Manager utilises an Explorer-type interface for viewing image thumbnails, categorising and editing images.
